The Royal Air Force Association 381 Branch Choir, which is open to all Branch/Club members, was originally formed in September 2012 and has since developed into a supportive, enthusiastic group who enjoy singing together each Tuesday evening. The Choir members are a friendly ensemble and new members would be made very welcome.
A tour of Porto in Portugal by the RAFA 381 Choir during February 2015, was arranged by Musical Director Miguel Fernandes which proved to be a resounding success. The choir gave a performance of ‘Fiddler on the Roof’ and ‘My Fair Lady’ at two venues, the first was St James’ Church and then a local choir the “Douro Singers” joined the RAFA 381 choir to sing two traditional English folk songs, ‘Early One Morning’ and ‘A Roving’, afterwards the “Orquestra de Gaia” gave a performance.
At the second venue, Corpus Christi Vila De Gaia (a former convent) the RAFA 381 Choir after performing ‘Fiddler on the Roof’ and ‘My Fair Lady’, sang a traditional Portuguese song ‘Chapeu Novo’ which received a standing ovation, afterwards they were joined by two more local choirs that performed various works by Bach, Verdi and Karl Jenkins.
November 2016 saw some of the RAFA 381 Branch Choir embarking on a trip to Prague. This was an Interkultur Event “On Stage in Prague”. There were 8 other International choirs representing Croatia, Norway, Bulgaria, Prague, Morocco and two from Israel all of us (apart from the Czech Choir) were staying at the Hotel Diplomat Prague. We sang at several tourist spots throughout the beautiful city of Prague and then on our last day attended a concert at the Museum of Music with the other 8 choirs for a final performance. Each choir had a 15 minute slot to sing their repertoire before all choirs joining together to perform two songs, “Going Home” and a Czech song “Veru si ty”, almost 200 voices, what an amazing sound and experience.
October 2018 found our choir once again travelling, this time to Krakow in Poland to join with
other International choirs from Slovakia, Romania, Italy and Russia at the 10th Cracovia Music Festival 2018 where our first concert was held in the beautiful church of St.Peter and
St.Paul, followed later in the day with a final performance at the concert hall of Manggha overlooking the river.
In September 2019 the choir are again venturing abroad, this time to Lisbon where they are going to be joining 11 other International choirs, and are practising very hard for this.
The Choir also enjoys performing alongside other choirs at recitals, several local events such as the ChoirFest concert and ChoirFest at Christmas which are held at the Regis Centre, Rox in the Park, Eastleigh & Southampton Choral Festival along with many other local and charitable events. Armed Forces Day and the RAFA carol service each year are two of the choir’s events that they always enjoy performing at along with putting on their own recital annually inviting two other choirs from around the local area to join them for an afternoon of singing and meeting each other.
With more performances planned, the future is going to be busy. New choir members are always welcome, and if you feel that you would like to join us on this exciting journey (who knows where we may travel to in the future), do come along to our rehearsals any Tuesday at 6.15 pm, chat to the choir, stay and listen or even join in.
