The RAFA 381 Choir, which is open to all Branch/Club members, was originally formed in September 2012 and has since developed into a supportive, enthusiastic group who enjoy singing together each Tuesday evening. The Choir members are a friendly ensemble and new members would be made very welcome.
Tour of Portugal
A tour of Porto in Portugal by the RAFA 381 Choir during February 2015, was arranged by Musical Director Miguel Fernandes which proved to be a resounding success. The choir gave a performance of ‘Fiddler on the Roof’ and ‘My Fair Lady’ at two venues, the first was St James’ Church and then a local choir the “Douro Singers” joined the RAFA 381 choir to sing two traditional English folk songs, ‘Early One Morning’ and ‘A Roving’, afterwards the “Orquestra de Gaia” gave a performance. At the second venue, Corpus Christi Vila De Gaia (a former convent) the RAFA 381 Choir after performing ‘Fiddler on the Roof’ and ‘My Fair Lady’, sang a traditional Portuguese song ‘Chapeu Novo’ which received a standing ovation, afterwards they were joined by two more local choirs that performed various works by Bach, Verdi and Karl Jenkins.
On 10th November 2016 some of the RAFA 381 Branch Choir embarked on a trip to Prague. This was an Interkultur Event “On Stage in Prague”. There were 9 choirs including our own from different countries, the Jeka Primorja from Croatia, Cor Mio from Norway, Vocal Group Fortissimo from Bulgaria, Rolnicka Praha from Prague, Sharim Bashaar from Israel, Chorale al Boughaz from Morocco, Derech’ Hatavor from Israel and Yeladot Gdolot also from Israel, and all of us (apart from the Czech Choir) were staying at the Hotel Diplomat Prague.
We sang at several tourists spots throughout the beautiful city of Prague and then on our last day attended a concert at the Museum of Music with the other 8 choirs for a final perfomance.
We were the first chior to perform and Miguel wisely had chosen very English songs, Early One Morning, A-Roving, Consider Yourself, Give me Wings and Sailing, the accoustics were brilliant and we sounded good, we were then able to sit and relax and enjoy the other choirs performances. Then it was time for everyone to perform the two joint songs, “Going Home” and a Czech song “Veru si ty”, almost 200 voices, what an amazing sound and experience. All too soon it was time to come home, we were all tired but happy.
The Choir enjoys performing alongside other choirs at recitals, it performs at several events such as the first ChoirFest (below) which was held at the Regis Centre, Rox in the (Hotham) Park, Eastleigh & Southampton Choral Festival along with many other local and charitable events, plus putting on its own recitals.
With more performances planned, the future is going to be busy. New choir members are always welcome, and if you feel that you would like to join us on this exciting journey, do come along to our rehearsals any Tuesday at 6.15 pm, chat to the choir, stay and listen or even join in.
