Wed 6th – Reading Group (11 am for 11.45 am start):  “The Miniaturist” by Jesse Burton. Set in Amsterdam during the 17th C., Nella arrives to become the wife of Johannes.  As a wedding present she receives a cabinet-sized replica of their home and she sets about furnishing it with the help of the Miniaturist, an artist.  A story evolves of love, obsession, betrayal and retribution, appearance and truth.

Wed 6th – Reading Group (11.130 am for 11.45 am start):  “’Wounds: A Memoir of War and Love” by Fergal Keane.  Fergal Keane has been reporting conflicts from all over the world during the last three decades.  In this memoir, however, he tells the story of his grandmother Hannah Purtill, her brother Mick and his friend Con Brosnan, and how they and their neighbours took up guns to fight the British Empire and create an independent Ireland.  It is also the story of another Irishman, Tobias O’Sullivan, who fought against them because he believed it was his duty, as a policeman, to uphold the law of his country. Wed 3rd – Reading Group (11.30 am for 11.45 am start):  “The Children Act” by Ian McEwan.  Fiona Maye is a High Court judge presiding over family cases.  She is well respected but her professional success belies domestic strife.  Her husband, Jack, asks her to consider an ‘open’ marriage and, after an argument, leaves the marital home.  Fiona throws herself into work and an especially complex case involving a seventeen year old boy whose parents will not permit a life-saving blood transfusion because it conflicts with their beliefs as Jehovah Witnesses.
